ANSI and Workcred Board Member to Co-Chair Revision of Major ISO Standard for Accreditation

10/02/2014

Cynthia Woodley, Ed.D., a principal contributor to the successful growth of ANSI Accreditation programs for more than a decade, was recently selected to serve as co-convenor of a new ISO CASCO (International Organization for Standardization Conformity Assessment Committee) Working Group (WG) tasked with revising ISO/IEC 17011, Conformity assessment - General requirements for accreditation bodies accrediting conformity assessment bodies. She is joined as co-convenor by Alister Dalrymple of the Association Franaise de Normalization (AFNOR).

ISO 17011 specifies general requirements for accreditation bodies that assess the competence of conformity assessment bodies that carry out testing, inspection, certification, and calibration activities. This International Standard is the basis for mutual recognition of accreditation bodies in countries around the world; ANSI accreditation is among those organizations recognized as successfully meeting the requirements of ISO/IEC 17011.

Dr. Woodley served as a founding accreditation assessor for ANSI's accreditation program for personnel certification bodies. She also previously served as Convenor of ISO CASCO WG 30, tasked with the revision of ISO/IEC 17024, Conformity assessment - General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons, and the development of ISO Technical Specification (TS) 17027, Conformity assessment -- Vocabulary related to competence of persons used for certification of persons.

In 2012 she received an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Meritorious Service Award, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the U.S. voluntary standardization system and service in support of ANSI's long term objectives [see related story]. Dr. Woodley is a member of the ANSI Board of Directors, the Board of Directors for Workcred (a new ANSI affiliate focused on workforce credentialing) and has long been involved in professional credentialing activities as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and psychometrician for Professional Testing, Inc. Created in 1970 as a policy committee of ISO, CASCO works to identify and define effective ways to assess the conformity of products, processes, services, and management systems, and to develop International Standards that will harmonize national, regional and international conformity assessment methods and systems. Lane Hallenbeck, ANSI vice president for accreditation services, currently serves as the committee's chairperson.
